Horseback Riding Trails

Joshua Tree National Park

California Riding & Hiking Trail

Thirty-five miles of the California Riding and Hiking Trail pass through Joshua Tree National Park. Access to the trail is at its junction with Covington Flats, Keys View, and Squaw Tank (Geology Tour) Roads at Ryan Campground; south of Belle Campground; and near the north entrance to the park.

The start of the 35 mile section of the California Riding and Hiking Trail is at Black Rock Canyon Campground. This is the only trail where horses are permitted. The various washes around Black Rock Canyon are also open to horses.

A popular 10 mile loop from Black Rock Canyon Campground is through wide wash to Eureka Peak returning on the California Riding and Hiking Trail. Another popular segment is the California Riding and Hiking Trail from Black Rock Canyon to Covington Flats.
