There are a few so called slot canyons in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, but The Slot of Borrego Mountain Wash is the most accessible. At the narrowest portion it is about a foot wide with boulders wedged between the walls towering above your head. Owls and ravens have build their nests on the ledges of these walls.

To reach the trailhead, drive to the intersection of Borrego Springs Road and Highway 78. Turn east on the Highway and drive 1.5 miles; look for Buttes Pass Road on your left (near mile marker #87). Drive one mile on this washboard road to the Borrego Mountain Wash junction and stay to the left for another 0.7 mile.

At this point, park where the road curves sharply to the left. You will see the deep red sediments that have been tilted upward. Below you is the narrow chasm named The Slot. It is a short but steep decent into the beginning of The Slot. Once you are at the bottom of the wash, hike downstream through the meanders of the canyon. The way may be rocky if there has been recent flooding. After about 1/2 mile, the canyon opens up and you can continue to hike another 1/2 mile to a set of wind caves. There is a wonderful view across San Felipe Wash towards Font's Point from the top of the wind caves.
