Within the blazing canyon I sensed a presence there
A trail of clues I pondered until I saw it clear
"A heart that's free for me roams here!" in joyful exclamation
"I want to own it!" was my prideful proclamation
"Neither can you do", the wind so softly moaned
"For he's branded by another, and by no one will be owned."
I slough this off and follow search across and in a run
Pebbles under foot and one lay on my tongue
What coming now? A tree that seems alive!
Suddenly I stare in your defiant eye
I know you feel me here as I inch closer to my dream
The pebble from my tongue now outstretched for you to see
I come too strong and close and you run past me to the open
I wait for hours in the shade with hope that you will soften
"Won't you come with me? I'll feed you from my hand,
and from your weary feet I'll brush away the sand."
Steadfast there is no movement, save the air that pulses here
"Hands of seventeen, look now! I promise to play fair!"
Hoping that your heart will win, I put on all my charm
Wax and wane and woo and wish, then curse just who you are
Futile. Now I see the truth and sadly acquiese.
I'll never rein you in and hold you to my chest.
And as I turn to walk away you seem to finally sigh
Looking back with longing eyes I say "Farewell, Moon Eye."
