Steve, I cannot be the only one guessing. I am going to say somewhere north of Red Bluff, looking west. I can only give you a region, not specific spot.

I would say ocotillo wells or possibly somewhere near Death Valley. Hmm.
This photo was taken off CA-58, just above McKettrick, outside the Carrizzo Plains.
