Mojave Maxine vs Punxsutawney Phil

Mojave Maxine (source: BLM)

Forget about Punxsutawney Phil, when Mojave Maxine comes out of her burrow Spring will soon arrive.  She is currently in her burrow at the Living Desert in Palm Desert, California.  She started her brumination which is similar to hibernation in the fall of 2011.   Maxine has been hosting the annual Mojave Maxine Emergence Contest since the year 2000.  Students from many areas of Nevada, California and Utah can enter this contest to win prizes for themselves, their class and their teacher, by guessing the date and exact time that Maxine emerges.  If I were to guess the accuracy of when spring comes to the desert, the contest between Mojave Maxine and Punxsutawney Phil is an easy bet.  I bet on Maxine to be more accurate.

If you want to see the dates that Maxine has emerged in the past six years, read the list below:

YEAR DATE OF EMERGENCE TIME
2006 February 9
2007 February 15

Mojave About Mojave

For the purposes of this blog I call myself Mojave because of my love for the Mojave Desert. My real name is Jeff Drozd and I have lived in the Yucca Valley area of the Hi-Desert since 1976, I have always loved our Mojave Desert. My appreciation for the Mojave has grown even more over the years. I am a Career & Technical Education teacher and coordinator at the high school level as well as a part-time college instructor. I also currently serve on the Town of Yucca Valley Planning Commission. In my spare time I enjoy researching desert facts, exploring the desert, geocaching and enjoying the many animals that keep my wife and I very busy.
