Roy’s Cafe and Motel in Amboy, California, is legendary.
First, it was the place to stop on Route 66 between Kingman, Arizona and Los Angeles.
In the 70′s, Interstate 40 through the Mojave Desert was finished and Amboy went from being a roadside stop to being 12 miles, each way, out of the way. Amboy withered, and ultimately, Roy’s Cafe closed.
Now, Roy’s Cafe is a haven for desert explorers and photographers. Roy’s flying-V main building architecture, white on blue painted cabins, and tall, but simple, colorful sign, shock the viewer of out of the boredom of the colorless desert.
The intrigue of Roy’s Cafe continues to draw visitors and film makers.

In 2009, we were privileged to have our photo, Roy’s Cafe, win an honorable mention at the Orange County Fair. The photo was also mentioned by name in a review in the Orange County Register discussing the various photos displayed at the Fair that year.
In 2011, we are proud to offer a three-photo set, that we call “The Roy’s Collection”, for purchase.
Low resolution versions of the three pictures are shown here.
