Elephant Knees
Text and Photos by Bill Sullivan

One of the most spectacular sights out here is a formation known as Elephant Knees. It's a mudhill ridge with thick fluted that look like the knees of elephants. Elephant Knees is on the left or south side of the jeep trail about half a mile after you leave the Split Mountain divide.

From the road, you look up at it and view it from a distance. You can also walk Mudhill Wash, to the east of Elephant Knees, to get a closer view. The flat top of Elephant Knees is a layer of marine sediments. You can look at it, but you mustn't climb on it.

The fragile hills of dried mud are tempting to trail bike riders, motorcyclists and drivers of other motor vehicles. If you drive out here, or ride a bike, please stay on the trail.
