Sandstone Canyon
Text and Photos by Bill Sullivan

Lowell and Diana Lindsay, in their book "The Anza-Borrego Desert Region: A Guide to the State Park and Adjacent Areas," note that Sanstone Canyon "has long been considered one of the most impressive canyons of the park." A walk through the canyon emerges on a vista of the surrounding badlands.

Fossil vertebrates 4 or 5 million years old have been discovered in and around Sandstone Canyon including extinct, rabbit-like mammals such as Hypolagus (pre-hare) and Pewelagus. From the same period have been discovered the weathered footprints tentatively identified as belonging to the North America camelopine Megatylopus. Deposits in and around Sandstone Canyon offer one of the richest concentrations of Lower Pliocene (3.6 - 5.4 MYA) fossil vertebrates in North America.
