Isla San Esteban

Isla San Esteban comprises30 square miles of volcanic slopes and cliffs and is located 12-miles southeast of the large Isla Tiburon (the only inhabited island in the region). Although the perimeter is mountainous, one central valley is thick with Cardon (Pachycereus pringlei) and other cactus. It is also populated with many reptiles, including Chuckwallas and Desert Iguana, which like to sun themselves atop the 20-foot-high Cordons.
Sixty-five percent of the flora here are considered shrubbery; 30 percent are ephemeral with Pigweed the most common -- over 50 percent of the reptiles here are found only on this island.
