Sea of Cortez Log
Day 7: March 28

Isla Coronado (Smith Island)

This volcanic island, located in the Channel of the Whales east of Isla Angel de la Guardia, is actually an ancient volcanic cinder cone. Red Egrets live here on the volcanic plug that creates an islet just north of the island. A turtle pond, enclosed by a crescent spit, is great for snorkeling. The cinder cone itself rises 1,000 feet straight out of the Gulf to make for a strenuous half-day hike up and down its treacherous slopes, especially since the entire cone is composed of large, jagged chunks of andesite.
