Re: Parashant
Whitmore Canyon, Bar-10 ranch. http://www.bar10.com/ I’m sure most of you have seen or know about this place, but I recall any write-ups from anyone who has stopped or stayed at the Bar-10. This place is a nice oasis set in a spectacular area. My wife liked the accommodations and the place is clean ...

Re: communication
I doubt you be able to communicate dependably (or at all) over that distance with your handheld. Of course it could happen, good luck.kingmantraveler wrote:.... We'll start out each day NMT 15 miles apart.
From what you say, my handheld will be adequate.

Re: communication
On flat dry-lake type terrain you will have good range, in a tight twisty narrow canyon you will have almost no range. What do you plan to use the radio for? IMO for short range talk between fellow hikers FRS radio is better for unlicensed communication. Power on FRS may be less, but moving up to UH...

AAA’s new San Berdo map
I picked up a new AAA San Bernardino county map (now called San Bernardino Region) it now includes Las Vegas areas but doesn’t have the whole SB county as before.
It dose outline the new Fort Irwin Boundary and could be helpful to explorers heading out toward Superior Valley North of Barstow.

Re: Canyonlands NP road closings
Thanks, but that’s a bummer to read. I always marvel about the people who built that road in the first place. Some of the dugways early miners build are impressive.

Re: Desert Rats in Distant Times
That is funny   , I like checking out the letters to the editor, and that one was funny. For those not familiar with Desert Mag 'Randall' was Randall Henderson the editor at the time. One thing I also recall was the stories of advice about the best way to get your vehicle unstuck, then lat...

Re: Death Valley Scotty Flies
Alas I have made it to the July 1953 copy of Desert Magazine. Right beside the article SC started this thread with is a news clip about Saline Valley (pg 32). The clip talks about the citizens of Lone Pine and Bishop protesting the military take over of Saline Valley for an Aerial Gunnery Range. Sen...

If you want to go to Gold Butte with any mechinized vehicles, you better go soon. Thanks for the heads up. I like that area and didn’t know it was up for wilderness. I did find this map. Mike do you know if it is accurate per the plan? http://www.nevadawilderness.org/items/map_GoldButteMap_April201...

Re: Yucca Valley to Lucerne
The area Lee was in for the 1st segment of his pictures is nice temps even this time of year. IMHO, I’d rather be in that area, than in Barstow this time of year. There are many structures in that area, some of them must have been beautiful in there day, some are still used often and are being maint...
