Re: Hiker's Hell
Hey this is what can happen to a well trained hiker with a lifetime experiance. One of my crew called at 7:00 pm last night and found a shaft 20' deep. So off I went to check it out. Then boom boom out go the lights

Ouch, I have a few of those from trips made years ago. Hope it heals up nice and pretty.
The scar will also make for some good stories.

Re: Hiker's Hell
Owie, Owie, Owie!!
Sorry to see you got "bumped". Stitches? Did you fall into the hole? Did you lose consciousness? Did they have to get you out of the hole?
See - I thank you for sharing this - it is the life-timers that get hurt most often - we are the ones that let our guards down, and - boom. (plus, obviously, we are probably doing something outside more often, so the law of averages say that ups our chances of getting injured).
Any comments on what you should have done differently????? (we don't know exactly how you got your head into the action, so maybe you could shed some light?).
Thanks, and ---- take care.

Re: Hiker's Hell
Beth the details. I refused the stitches or staples because they said it would make me look more bald and I would have to get a shot, I refused!! No shots for me.
I did not get knocked out. But knocked me into a different world for a few hours and bruised my brain. I had bleed alot inside that hole before my crew through my bag down to me. I always carr blood clotting kits and was able to stop the bleeding for a few min at a time.
I climbed out using hand over hand by myself and had lost alot of blood getting to the top. The shaft was only about 45 min from my truck and I drove myself home.
What happened?? A camlock pulled lose and there wasn't a second in place so I fell forward into the walls and broke my fall using my head (not intentionally).
What would I do different?? Use my safety gear

Re: Hiker's Hell
Glad that you're ok Kurt.
Go figger....After carving a decent replica of the Salt River Canyon into your topknot....you dread a needle???
Goes to show, though. As solid as that rock may appear or the gap that your camlock was anchored in,there is always the "what if?" to remember.I bought a couple of camlocks but have never been able to use them down there because of the brittle/crumbly nature of the rock where they otherwise would have been handy.
