Re: The Lost Dutch Oven Mine
Wow Roy that link & information is really great!
(I’ll have it to post over into my Assaying topic!)
I’m amazed with oven, furnaces, & fire in history>
All those ancient accounts! Prometheus & Hephaestus
Then there is Heraclitus account about people being afraid
to enter his domain because of his stove/fire.
What was he cooking? What was he transforming?
A story like that is recounted and passed down
through out the ages because it means something.
And what about Descartes?
Didn’t he lock himself in a room with a stove and came up with:
I think …therefore I’m hot
And Moses on the mountaintop? They exclaimed:
the smoke went up as if from a kiln. And that golden calf!
Didn’t Moses smelt it till it turned to OXide?
But like I say: I always look for the hot stories!
I realize the headlines of this lost gold mine was probably just recounting the container the ore was in.
But maybe not! I took that picture out of Barry Storm book, “Thunder Gods Gold”.
I had saw it a few weeks ago and those lines ‘Dutch Oven Mine ’….just leapt off the page at me!
Just like the flash of insight I had when the ol’ Dutchman
told Rheiney that his gold was buried under his hearth!!! AH HA!
Things that make me go …
hhmmmm….

Re: The Lost Dutch Oven Mine
Hey Gang,
I was under the impression that this one was already found. In Desert Magazine they talk about it being worked by Clifford Gillespie back in 1941. Here is a link
http://dezertmagazine.com/old-desert-magazine/18
just click on Oct41 and go to page 5 for the complete story... and btw there is a letter to the editor in Dec 1941 from John D Mitchell who says that he believes this is the REAL dutch oven mine....

Re: The Lost Dutch Oven Mine
Well that fabulous!
does seem like history subject never ends
The winter months I mess around with geological time
during the Summer months I’m in the library
the 900 section
history all year around
This is prbly not the place to go off on
but a historical novel I’m anticipating
is a new one by Umberto Eco
he’s rate as one of my favorites
thanks

Re: The Lost Dutch Oven Mine
I just read a good one called " Campo the Forgotten Gunfight " by Bryon Harrington. It's more of a novel style book about a real life gunfight that happened here in SoCal. If you are familiar with Tiburcio Vasquez, it was basically his gang that tried to rob the whole town of Campo. Vasquez was hung and his band looking to get back to Mexico but needed some " start up " cash. It's a GREAT story and worth the read, I have met the author and he took 10 years to do the research and 2 years to write the book. You can get it on Amazon, if you interested...

TradClimberHistorik951 might be on to something here TC. You might want to go back and check this hole out. Keep an eye out for any cast iron cookware...you may have found it.historik951 wrote:

The Lost Dutch Oven Mine.
Legend has it that ol' Jacob Waltz had a kid brother, Tennessee, that had a get rich scheme that never panned out, as it were. Tennessee Waltz was sure that the settlers in the wagon trains heading for California would hate it and eventually turn around and head back. He was gonna be out in the desert with a dutch oven shop and sell 'em all new cookware for their trip back to Ohio or Kentucky or wherever.
Well, ol' Tennessee never counted on people likin' raw fish and expensive coffee so, as it turned out, nobody wanted to leave. He decided to dig a hole in a remote location of the Santa Rosa Mountains and bury his dutch ovens for a possible future exodus.
Well, he found gold, don't cha know. About that time his big brother showed up to see how he was gettin' along.
Tennessee showed Jacob the gold he found in his dutch oven hole and they decided they better draw attention away from the Santa Rosa Mtns. to keep out the goldseekers and has been celebrities.. So, ol' Jacob took a 12" oven full of gold over to Arizona and started braggin' how he has a mine up in the Superstition Mtns.
Worked like a charm. He drew maps and convoluted directions how to get to his "mine". People ate it up. Jacob didn't live too long after that but Tennessee took some of his gold, moved to Nashville and invented country music. He never got back out to his gold mine but the brothers got everyone looking in the wrong place for the wrong mine - 'til you came along.
