I been working with fossils lately

Here is an ammonite I cut/sliced open

then tried to polish the face

these critters are ancient & extinct

Man, that is REALLY cool!!

We have found some ammonites here, and were trying to figure out how to incorporate one or two into the fireplace surround - I think you gave me a GREAT idea!

A clearer picture of the flat.
As I understand it--- the critter within
would build a new cell
as it outgrew the old one,
hence the pattern.

That is really cool Ed - and you are right, supposedly the ammonites can be up to six feet across. The biggest we found was WAY less than that though, only found out how to find them last summer and haven't been to the spot this year. I don't know if it holds true everywhere but they are only found in a certain layer of rock around here, anything above or below that layer and zilch.

What are you planning to do with those examples? Just curious, but starting to get some ideas.
