Thanks,Mike, for posting the article. Thanks again as well, for the previous tip, regarding a likely interpretation of the glyph as depicting Xibalba (the Maya underworld)or(place of fear).
I'm still collecting information though,on similar art from other possible sources as well.
I'll post a few more pics which might be relevant to the topic when I've had some time to catch up on things around home.
In the meantime, though both rocks (foreground and background) may be merely the result of natural erosion,I think they make the view more interesting.

Kurt - I like the shape of the bighorn in the background rock. From the photo it looks like natural erosion, but it's still cool :)

Casca, what is it you actually see in your photo?

Hi Cub,

I see a god head looking south. This was taken in New Mexico. I was surprised to find what I believe to be other than Spanish signs at this spot. There appears to be others marks and such I don't believe to be used by the Spanish visitors.

I was looking at a open pit mine when I discovered this. Also having read some about the Geological history of the area, I soon learned that this area holds a lot of silver and some gold.

To back up and make my post even more confusing, I was excited to read about Padre La Rue, and his renegade mine supposedly being very close by.

Now how does all this tie into the Mayans or other ancient civilizations in the Superstitions. Water, campsites, a defensible positions, are some things that could link the Spanish with the Mayans. I believe it goes back before the Mayans. Another thread.

But face it, gold and silver seem to be the common link. So locating Mayan signs in a area could mean there is a more modern mine placed and concealed there by the Spanish. When I say Spanish, I mean the early Spanish not under order yet to do otherwise. I feel they would be the only ones capable of such a act.

This interest me as I wish to do some prospecting in the Fall and I will be looking for the older Monuments. I am looking at sites here now in New Mexico for the same purpose. If it did happen as I believe it has, it would not just be here in New Mexico.

I believe the Indians, of the time could answer many questions we have of the superstitions. Since Im new and not versed on every aspect you all talk about here. I wont smear up the board with what I am studying. I think there is some very strong fellinmgs about this, and I hesitate to join in on controversial subjects.

Casca, please feel free to post photos as this is an open forum and nothing you posted or mentioned is off topic from the thread.

Just because I don't always see the same things other folks do in photographs doesn't mean they aren't there! I just wasn't clear what it was your photo was showing is all.

I don't have any experience on Maya influences either in Mexico or Arizona or anywhere else for that matter so it's all new to me.

Thanks for clarifying.

I have posted this photo before on other sites.
High on a canyon wall, one of the major canyons in the Sups,it is approximately 30-40 ft. high.I spotted it while scanning the upper bluffs for ruins which I suspected could be found in the area. There is a narrow trail which angles up the canyon wall, ending at the base of the figure. It cannot be seen at all from the main trail or wash along the bottom.
There may be more figures (more human in form) to the left along the same cliff and trail, but I have yet to confirm this. The entire area was in shadow before I could make it to where I wanted to take more photos.I haven't had a chance to go back as yet.
Mike, with his interest in Mezo-lore,should find this interesting.Especially with the depiction of piles of rounded objects under the figure's outstretched arms (dripping blood onto the objects?) .

Hi SomeHiker,

As your out and about seeing those large god heads as I call them. Look below in the valley and see if you can see anything resembling a snake. It would be a rock arrangement, and if readable, pictograms in the side at a certain time of day. I would say look at the snake from hi up, and a good distance away.

Cub, I will look for some picture examples. You guys do your best here to put out good information. I am trying to do the same. My knowledge is what Im finding, and the only reading I get is on the forums........so Im just connecting the dots.

Thanks

Snakes ain't hard to find out there. When I attempted to climb the slope up to the image, there were plenty of them.Seemed like one every ten feet or so.Next time,I'll go when it's a bit cooler. :o

Found my first snake last week. Couldn't see him, but he was close.

Got a pic for cub. This is a small spot on the rocks of heads. They don't look Spanish.

Looks like a gut holding a head to me.
