If you are going boating on Lake Powell ---or in Utah

Post by Jim_b »

Utah State Parks boating rangers, in partnership with the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and U.S. Coast Guard, will sponsor three boating under the influence (BUI) checkpoints Saturday, June 25 at Halls Crossing Marina on Lake Powell, the South Marina at Willard Bay State Park and the Main Launch Ramp at Sand Hollow State Park. Other local enforcement agencies will assist in the effort.

Operation Dry Water is a coordinated, national weekend of BUI detection and enforcement aimed at reducing the number of alcohol-related accidents and fatalities.

Nationally, more than 17 percent of boating fatalities result from alcohol use. Operating a vessel with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher is against Utah law. Boaters caught operating under the influence will find their voyage terminated and their vessel impounded. Additionally, penalties can include arrest, fines, and even the loss of driving privileges.

NASBLA is a national nonprofit organization that works to develop public policy for recreational boating safety. NASBLA represents the recreational boating authorities of all 50 states and six U.S. territories.

In 2010, all 50 states and 6 U.S. territories participated in Operation Dry Water. Over that three-day weekend there were 40,127 vessels and 66,472 boaters contacted by law enforcement, 322 BUI arrests made, and 4,171 citations and 7,522 warnings issued for safety violations.
