Mojave Road

If you are traveling the Mojave Road you may cross North Kelbaker Road and continue your journey on the historic 4x4 road.

North Kelbaker Road, between Kelso Depot and Baker, is closed to traffic for the next month due to road construction. There is no access to the Mojave Road or the Lava Tube from the closed North Kelbaker Road. While there are preserve routes to access the Mojave Road or Aiken Mine Road/Lava Tube from other locations, they require travelers to have a 4x4 high clearance vehicle, heavy duty tires, and plenty of water. There is seldom cell phone reception in the preserve backcountry, so it is better to err on the side of caution and not venture off the pavement if you or your vehicle aren't prepared. There were two vehicles stuck in the sand and a vehicle rollover, thankfully with no injuries, inside the preserve on 4/2/16.
