Accident in Sheep Canyon

Post by Space Cowboy »

Did anyone hear or read about an accident in Sheep Canyon up off Coyote Canyon, ABDSP? This would have been about three weeks ago now. A Boy Scout fell 30 feet and had to be airlifted out. I haven't heard any more than that since. Any links greatly appreciated.

Maybe a link to the article, or even scanning it up. I've been in contact with the scout master and the family, but there's always some details you miss.

The Borrego Sun doesn't have a website. I'll see if I can scan it for you tomorrow.

Linda, you're a peach.

Send it to dmsftr@authorsden.com.

Are you the Linda that used to post here, that lives out on what she called Poverty Flat, or maybe Gulch? I thought you had a different handle.

Thank you in advance,

On it's way. Nope, I live in Borrego Springs. Think you're thinking of Pamela.

FEBRUARY 4. 2O1O BORREGO SUN
Confusion delays canyon rescue of Boy Scout with broken leg

A 15-year-old Boy Scout on a group hike in Anza-Borrego Desert State
Park fell and broke his femur Jan. 17, prompting a multi-agency rescue
effort during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.
The teen was hiking near a waterfall in Sheep Canyon, a remote area
of Coyote Canyon when he was injured around noon, according to
ABDSP Ranger Josh Heitzmann. Heitzmann called the beginning
of the rescue effort a "crazy situation" when Borrego Springs Fire
Protection District paramedics were dispatched to Borrego Palm Canyon
in error while both California Highway Patrol and the Sheriffs
ASTREA helicopter searched from the sky.
Eventually, the state park's fixed-wing Air Patrol One helped
to coordinate efforts between the CHP copter, ASTREA and rangers
on the ground, who could not use their radios due to the steep canyon
location. Ileitzmann and two other rangers drove up Coyote Canyon's
bypass road and hiked into the location in Sheep Canyon.
BSFPD staged at the north endof Di Giorgio Road. The CHP copter
had been patrolling over Ocotillo Wells and re-routed to Sheep
Canyon to assist. A paramedic was on board the chopper that landed in
a wash near the canyon, according to Ranger/Pilot Kelley McCague.
ASTREA, though, was the only copter equipped with the proper
hoist gear to lift the patient out of the canyon. It took about 45
minutes to stabilize the teen and prepare him for the ride in a hanging
basket, McCague said. ASTREA deputies and an EMT brought the
teen by chopper to the waiting CHP helicopter in Collins Valley.
From there, the teen was transported to Desert Regional Medical
Center. High winds in the canyon played a factor in the rescue,
McCague noted.
