The Boulder Dam By-Pass - Question

Post by Plays In The Dirt »

In approximately a week and a half I'll be driving from Arizona to Nevada and I would like to see if I could stop and capture some Photos of this feat in engineering. Can anyone tell me what highway I would travel to get close to this project, (I'll be coming from Phoenix), and can I even get close enough to shoot Photos? I do have long lenses so I don't have to be right on top of it. Thanks!

Get off I-40 in Kingman and take US 93 north. Stop at the dam (you will be delayed anyway) at the parking lot near the stop sign and start taking all the pictures you want. If you walk over the dam you will get a great view of the bridge. Take a wide angle lens with you.

Later,

I used to travel HWY 93 all the time....If you go that way from Phoenix, be sure to stop off and visit the Burro Creek bridge.

Take Grand Avenue going NW out of Phoenix through Wickenburg towards Wickiup and Kingman.
There is a developed campground turnoff on the West side of the highway before the bridge and there used to be another primitive turnoff after the bridge...Back when I was in that area it was all undeveloped. That catwalk that you can see under the bridge...I was there!

If you have the time, take a nice walk along Burro Creek.

Begs the question:
Did you climb the catwalk?

Burro Creek Bridge area is known for some serious rock-hounding. You can see many specimans at the rock store in Nothing. Mike C.

Yes, I did climb the catwalk. The scariest part was climbing all that scree just to get to the structure! I crossed over the bridge (on the underside) and then crossed back, to descend the rocks the same way I got up.

When I was a teenager I made camp about a mile or so upstream from there...From December 1974 to May 1975. I would hitchhike into Phoenix every week or two to buy food and then hitchhike back to camp.

I found buckets of Apache tears and an interesting outcropping of borax. Lots of fire agate around too.
