Joshua Tree Cottonwood Campground Question

Hello,

We're planning on camping at Cottonwood Campground . When I went in October two years ago it was completely empty during the week. How is it Sunday PM to Wed during the 2nd week in May in terms of relative campground peace and quiet?

Also, in Death Valley you can car camp anywhere down a dirt road that's a certain distance from the main road (2-4 miles, I forget). Is this possible in JT? If so, any recommendations; we won't have a 4WD, just a mini-van, but that's never stopped me;)
