Water in the desert

Post by yuccahead »

You know what they say about water in the desert, take a picture, it'll last longer.
So that's what I did.

Of course. Where was that one taken LeeVW?

This was in Gatherer Canyon, kind of a strange name, until you come to the next canyon - called Hunter Canyon.

Yuccahead,

I took that photo while hiking up Bighorn Canyon between Big Bear and Landers, CA. It was January 22, 2007. My guess is that there is a seep or spring on that small hill, and the air temperature would get just high enough to let the water flow a little during the day, then it would freeze at night. The "frozen waterfall" was facing north, so the sun never hit it directly. There was also a 5 gallon bucket nearby with an old rusty pipe dripping water into it. I will post the photo of that when I find it. When my friends and I came around the corner towards the site, we startled a whole bunch of birds who were taking advantage of the water. There were also numerous animal tracks in the wash. This was one of the best little surprises I have come across while exploring the desert!

I love it when something completely unexpected happens out there.
