Hi Charlie and welcome to the forum.

In my early childhood, living in the swamps of Arkansas, it was not uncommon to occasionally find snakes in our house.

I make it a point to be mostly careful around them anytime for both of ours safety.

That's great to know! I will feel much better next time I visit ]Scottsdale knowing that the rattlers will be no where around!
I guess it all comes down to being aware of your surroundings. The snakes are more afraid of us, aren't they????

Keep up the good work! It's people like you that keep us all safe and happy in Scottsdale and anywhere else in the good Ol" USA!!!!!!

Generally speaking they are more willing to escape then fight. But some individuals, or even some populations and/or species have more irascible personalities. In other words, sometimes they do not back down. What we humans usually describe as being 'aggression' is actually defensiveness.... Sometimes extreme defensiveness, as in "the best defense is a good offense".
Some snakes will launch an aggressive defense.
