Glenwood Catwalk, New Mexico

Post by reptilist »

In the foothills of SW New Mexico, not far from my home is a canyon riparian area known as the Catwalk....Administered by the USFS, it is a picnic park and hiking trail. The trail is constructed in places of steel grating and steps above the water along the canyon walls.

I am happy to report that my pith helmet fit right in! So many crazy hats on so many people, one more is no matter...

After that hike we drove up to the old mining town of Mogollon....

I've heard of the Catwalk from my years living in NM, but never made the trip to check it out. Looks like a gorgeous area.

Rick,
This weekend being a holiday, there were a lot of people there...But I bet the week days are great!
I would not make it my sole destination for a long journey, but it's a decent side trip.

Greg, the year is 2009...What's wrong with you? Did you hit your head?

No fishing in White Water Creek....That's why it is so clean I think!
But that's not to say there are no fish there...

WWC flows into the San Francisco River, not far away, where there is warm water fishing.
The Gila River begins in the mountains just to the East and winds down hill, several miles away and South of WWC.
If you look for Glenwood, NM, you will see that is where the Catwalk is located.

Thanks for the heads-up, I’d never heard of that. 8-) I’ll have to check about the Catwalk when I get a chance to do another trip to NM.

I like trips that are a bunch of ‘Little side trips’ verses one major destination. Of course I’m always ready to suffer thru a major destination trip when I can. :D

Terry,

I just got a book that has a lot of geology of the area. A NM geo. society field guide to the area around Silver City. The catwalk had an article and some neat pic.s of the mill that used to be at the mouth of WWC. Most of the book is pretty technical geology stuff.
