Of the three posts above – grigori is more accurate.

The desert is not inherently dangerous – even in mid-summer.

Inexperienced hikers/backpackers, lacking acclimatization and proper equipment
are inherently dangerous in the summer desert – at least to themselves.

If one was to lack any of the three above prerequisites - the desert can be most unforgiving.
