A couple of the comments from readers was interesting.

One reader wrote:
"Amazing he was found alive after the heat we had over the weekend. Someone was looking out for him!"

Another reader wrote:
"Sound like he is an awsome survivalist or a lair"

A lot of the posters that comment on PE articles should have their computers taken away. The PE should disable the ability to make comments.
Same deal on the desert suns website. Same 'ol people that put the same crap under every other news story. Heck, might be the same people that post on PE...

His survival is pretty amazing. From what I read, he actually took much less water on the hike than first reported, "half a quart" in his own words, and ran out by Day 2.

Hi Paul,

It boggles my mind to think that guy wandered 13 or 15 miles (which ever it was) from where he parked (in the summer) and still had water left from 1/2 a quart, on his second day. He must have figured out that he was lost real early in his trip, and started conserving water right away.

It IS an amazing story, and I am glad he survived to tell it.

Best,

Jim

Here's a link to an L.A. Times story that has a lot of new (to me, anyway) details. Apparently he had no map but DID have a compass, which surprises me, since he apparently made little use of it, heading miles and miles in the opposite direction from his car, the campground and a major highway which he would have known to be generally north of where he was hiking. He must've gotten disoriented very quickly. He owes his life to whoever it was who spotted his tracks. He was in the least likely of places for searchers to look.

Thanks for the link Paul,

It contains a lot of details that I hadn't read about either.
I am glad he decided not to do any more hiking in the desert. Some people just don't belong out there.

Best,

Jim

And on side note, He said he was planning on donating money to the rescue orgs as well.
