"Water. water, water...

Post by yuccahead »

I get an Ed Abbey quote on FB every day. I've always liked this one from yesterday.

“Water, water, water…. There is no shortage of water in the desert but exactly the right amount, a perfect ratio of water to rock, of water to sand, insuring that wide, free, open, generous spacing among plants and animals, homes and towns and cities, which makes the arid West so different from any other part of the nation. There is no lack of water here, unless you try to establish a city where no city should be.” EA

Yes indeed! The logic is indisputable! So why are so many people expanding their presence in a barren no man's land?

Because living in towns and cities sucks.

How long will towns and cities thrive in the desert?

I have to wonder how long it is going to take before us humans begin to realize that we are going to have to reduce our numbers. The inborn failure of the capitalist system is that the rich have a vested interest in infinitely expanding our numbers for their benefit. There are over six billion people on this planet now, and the quality of life is not getting any better for it.

Oregon's favorite desert sage, Reuben Long, once said, "God quit making land, but he keeps right on making people."

Better move over and make room...it's not going to get any better any time soon.

There will always be water issues in the SW. But there is too much money to be made by providing the water to sustain growth. So one way or another, the water will always be there. Out here in my neck of the woods the jockeying for water rights is a never ending battle. As well as urban growth. It wont be long before they offer too much money for my 40 acres, and quite frankly if we get surrounded by track houses I'll sell. I'm eyeing a nice bit of property next to Reptilists...:)
