I know this is in the state of Utah, but this can happen anywhere.

Re: Some Interesting Reading
This has happened before in Utah. Lowering the water table causes it. Utah is the driest state in the US as far as water supply goes. Neat photos in the article. It does take a minute to load as it's a PDF.

Re: Some Interesting Reading
Those look very similar to some of the fissures that have occurred to the east and north of Phoenix. Right through a number of subdivisions.....

Bucky this is what happens when you draw the water table down in the aquifers.

Re: Some Interesting Reading
Thanks for the welcome. I've been here before, but not recently. Usually just watch from the sidelines.
There were numerous articles in the local rags here in the Phoenix area a couple of years ago (before the real estate debacle) concerning the fissures in the far east valley (Gold Canyon, Queen Creek, Apache Junction) and up in the Anthem area. I don't know if it was aquifer depletion or another cause. Some of the east valley land had been agricultural, but I don't believe that the Anthem area was.
I do know that a good number of builders got sued over it.

Re: Some Interesting Reading
Bucky: This same thing happened in another area of Utah and it was caused by depleted aquifers. that's not to say it's the cause ever where though. Apparently this hasn't been a problem here in Yuma yet, probably because they mostly use Colorado River Water here for eveything.

Re: Some Interesting Reading
Water is going to be a much bigger issue than energy. Most energy sources require water in large amounts - even PV.
