One of the most famous prospectors of the time, trapper/gold seeker “Pegleg
Smith” traveled through the Anza Borrego region. It's rumored he discovered
black gold somewhere in the east part of the Park. Where he found his gold has
never been discovered, or if it has, the location has never been published or
verified.

Dust Devils
Born of the battle between the sun and sand, the dust devil is a rapidly
rotating column of air that has wrapped itself around a rising thermal. The average
dust devil is ten to fifty feet in diameter. The chief ingredients for a good
dust devil are clear skies and a bright sun, along with a dry surface that can
become very hot.

- Fish Creek Wash - Wind Caves
Fish Creek Wash is an easy 4WD route that passes through
Split Mountain. The road winds through a gorge between the Vallecito Mountains
and Fish Creek Mountains. View this area, including the "anticline," an
unusual formation created during an earthquake that took place 5 million years
ago, the Elephant Knees mud hill formation, and the sculpted Wind Caves.
