Scientific name: Phrynosoma asio, Long-spined Horned Lizard

This may be the largest species of horned lizard in total size and weight. Its weight in American Pewter is considerable as well. Weighing in at about four pounds it is by far our hardest piece to cast. Asio is only found in Mexico and resides on the Southern coast in or around the Acapulco region.

Scientific name: Phrynosoma platyrhinos

The desert horned lizard, occurs in lowland deserts in southeastern Oregon, southwestern Idaho through Nevada, western Utah, California, Arizona, south barely into northern Baja California and northern Sonora, Mexico. This specie can be distinguished from other horned lizard species by the following: one row of lateral abdominal fringe scales; two moderately elongated occipital horns, not in contact at base; enlarged chin shields; nostrils inside the canthus rostralis; and blunt snout.

Scientific name: Phrynosoma taurus

The bull has nearly fused temporal horns behind the eyes and much reduced horns in the middle giving it quite the bull like appearance. Geographically, the Bull Horned Lizard is restricted to three southern Mexican states: Fuerrero, Oaxaca, and Puebla. The Bull generally occurs at lower elevations (4900 feet) then other Mexican species.

Scientific name: Moloch horridus

The Thorny Devil is found in Western Australia, and North and South Queensland. The lizard's body has conical spines all over, including spines above each eye and a hump behind its head which is spiny. The tail is also spiny. Its spines make it easy to identify. The color changes on the Thorny Devil's body from yellow to reddish brown to black, depending on which type of soil it is crossing.

Pair of Horned Lizards - In the early spring when horny toads emerge they go into the mating season. When a little boy and girl meet they do an intricate little dance not unlike the Texas two step. One-step forward two steps back. They go up on all fours and do little push ups to impress each other. “I can do more…. No, I can do more…” It is one of the cutest things I have ever seen and so funny it would make you fall off your chair laughing.

When the little girl knows she has that little boy’s attention and she is sure that it is the little boy that she wants, she goes up on all fours throws her tail up in the air not unlike a Spanish dancer swirling her skirt. She definitely has that little boy’s attention now.

The little boy in response goes up on all fours and his tail shoots out behind him and curls at the end. He has been captured. If she walked off a cliff right now he would just blindly follow her off with a silly expression on his face. - What happens next I leave up to your imagination.
