Bryce Canyon National Park is a series of huge natural amphitheaters carved into sedimentary rocks by the Paria River and its tributaries, along the edge of the Paunsagunt Plateau. Differential erosion has produced a fantastic array of brightly colored pinnacles, windowed walls, pedestals, fins and spires eroded from the Pink Cliffs layer of the Tertiary Claron formation, formerly referred to as the Wasatch formation. Profile of a Pioneer Woman  If, during the mid-19th century, she immigrated to the deserts of the Southwest by way of the Santa Fe Trail – from Missouri across Kansas into New Mexico – she had likely grown up in the verdant green forests of the Northeast or the profusely grassy plains of the Midwest.  If she immigrated by way of the desert trail to California – from east or central Texas across western Texas, southern New Mexico, southern Arizona and southern California – she had probably grown up somewhere in the steaming piney woods of the Old South.  More...

New Mexico's Highway 152 - Relatively little known, Highway 152 begins at Interstate Highway 25 some 51 miles north of Las Cruces, immediately west of the desert lake called Caballo Reservoir.  Paved for its entire route, it winds westward for some 75 miles, across the northern Chihuahuan Desert, the Mimbres Mountains, the Mimbres River Valley and the Piños Altos Mountains southern foothills.  It ends at Santa Clara, at the eastern edge of the historic area surrounding the quaint and charming community of Silver City. Cave Creek Canyon - I could hear the call of a whippoorwill from somewhere out there in the darkness, the only sound other than occasional sighs of wind that moved slowly down the canyon in the night like restless spirits, stirring the leaves of the Arizona Sycamore and Freemont Cottonwood trees.  Overhead, I could see the constellations of the stars and follow the arcing paths of the planets, brilliant points of light set against a sky of velvety blackness.  At such times, I can understand the mysticism and vision quests of the prehistoric shamans and medicine men. The Sonoran Desert is an arid region covering 120,000 square miles in southwestern Arizona and southeastern California, as well as most of Baja California and the western half of the state of Sonora, Mexico. Subdivisions of this hot, dry region include the Colorado and Yuma deserts. Irrigation has produced many fertile agricultural areas, including the Coachella and Imperial valleys of California. Warm winters attract tourists to Sonora Desert resorts in Palm Springs, California, and Tucson and Phoenix, Arizona. More..
Lake Havasu - One of the most popular and interesting lakes along the Colorado River is Lake Havasu, well-known for one particular historic point of interest, the London Bridge. The London Bridge is one of the main attractions at Lake Havasu that sets it apart from other desert playgrounds. More than 2.5 million visitors flock each year to shores of Lake Havasu to enjoy the scenery, the cool waters of the lake and abundant recreational activities. Water sports, hiking, off-road opportunities and cultural and natural history are some of the attractions that draw visitors year round.
