Desert Archaic peoples -Spiritual Quest Part 3 -With this article, DesertUSA continues its monthly series on the Native American peoples of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The series began with the earliest arrivals, the Paleo-Indians. It will proceed through the modern tribes and, finally, some of the extraordinary Native American individuals who shaped the history of our desert region. More --

Mosaic Canyon is one of those secluded wonders. The small outpost of Stovepipe Wells lies on the western slope of Death Valley National Park. The huge mountains of the Tucki range almost seem to nudge the village toward the valley floor. Just west of town, on the south side of Highway 190, is a small graded dirt road that climbs up a huge alluvial fan towards the mountain base. The road, three miles long, can be traversed by automobile and takes you to Mosaic Canyon. More..

San Carlos Lake, on the San Carlos Apache Indian Reservation 25 miles east of Globe, Arizona and 50 miles west of Safford off I-10, stands today just about where it has stood for the last 70 years—on the edge of disaster. It’s been up and it’s been down for seven decades while it has supplied water-based recreational opportunities on one hand and functioned, on the other hand, as a major storage facility of irrigation water for fertile downstream farmlands from Coolidge and Florence to Sacaton and Casa Grande. Truth or Consequences, NM – "T or C" to most New Mexicans – lies just upstream from Elephant Butte Dam and the lake which makes the region an attraction to snowbirds, tourists and recreation seekers. It is bracketed by the Fra Cristobal and Caballo ranges on the east and the Black Range on the west. As county seat, T or C serves agricultural and ranching interests. More..
