Mojave Max (source: BLM)

Mojave Max, the Spokestortoise for the Clark County Desert Conservation Program  since 1995 is currently in his burrow in Red Rock Canyon near Las Vegas, Nevada.  He started his brumination, which is similar to hibernation,  on November 12th, 2010.   Max has been hosting the annual Mojave Max Emergence Contest since the year 2000.  Students from many areas of Nevada, California and Utah can enter this contest to win prizes for themselves, their class and their teacher, by guessing the date and exact time of Max’s emergence.
