Roads

Paved Roads – Watch for potholes on all paved roads.

Late summer rains have begun in the Mojave. Conditions change quickly and roads may quickly become impassible or require 4 wheel drive. Use caution when traveling through the Preserve and do not attempt to drive through running water in roadways.

Black Canyon Road – Open. Sand, rocks, and debris on road.
Essex Road – Open. Sand, rocks, and debris on road.
Ivanpah Road – Open. Sand, rocks, and debris on road.
Kelbaker Road – Open. Sand, rocks, and debris on road.
Kelso-Cima Road – Open. Sand, rocks, and debris on road.
Lanfair Road – Open. Sand, rocks, and debris on road.
Morning Star Mine Road – Open. Sand, rocks, and debris on road.
Cima Road – Open. Sand, rocks, and debris on road.
Zzyzx Road – Open

Dirt Roads

Kelso Dunes Road – Open to all vehicles.
Black Canyon Road – Open to all vehicles
Cedar Canyon Road -Open; Passable to all vehicles from paved portion to Black Canyon Road. Recommended for high clearance 4WD vehicles east of Black Canyon Road.
Lanfair Road – Open. A few sandy and muddy areas; high clearance vehicle or 4WD recommended after recent storms.
Ivanpah Road – Open. Rough road in many areas; high clearance vehicle or 4WD recommended after recent storms.
Aiken Mine Road – Open. High clearance vehicle recommended.
Mojave Road – Open. 4-wheel drive strongly recommended.
One section of the Mojave Road crossing the Piute Range is badly eroded. Clearance is narrow.
Soda Lake currently impassible due to recent and predicted rains.
Wildhorse Canyon Road – High clearance vehicle or 4WD recommended after recent storms.
Macedonia Road – High clearance vehicle or 4WD recommended. Sand often washes onto the road under the railroad overpass at the west end of Macedonia Road after storms. Standard pickups and SUVs will probably fit, but higher-profile vehicles may not.
When traveling to the preserve via I-15 or I-40 check Caltran’s Highway Information Service for up-to-the-minute road conditions at 1-800-427-7623.

Kelso Depot Visitor Center open Friday through Tuesday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; closed Wednesday and Thursday.
Hole-in-the-Wall Information Center: Open Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mitchell Caverns, Providence Mountains State Recreation Area remains CLOSED until further notice.
