A very apt map in NV

Has anyone noticed that the map of Nye County in Nevada is shaped like a rock pick? I wonder if this is a coincidence or to celebrate the extensive mining history of that county?

Re: desert cooking

I believe there is a whole cookbook out on manifold cooking. :) I think this probably worked best on the older, heavy cars. I remember when I was a kid my dad used to wrap a fish in foil and attach it to someplace under the hood of our old Ford wagon and we'd have a picnic somewhere. We were like gy...

Historical Books about the Mohave

I've been putting together a library of historical books about my favorite places in the desert, and I've run into a problem. Have any of you purchased the "Keepers of the Caves" book about the Mitchell Caverns from the DUSA store? I tried to get it but I can't figure out how to put it int...

Re: some heart shaped rocks and other things of nature

I do enjoy! It's intriguing how the heart shape shows up again and again! I see them regularly. Thanks Ed! Got a really cool rock at the local farmer's market. It's a solid geode type cut in half, unpolished, and the inside is a very odd, slightly translucent, but slightly milky center. It reminds m...

Re: Old Time Prospecting - Tips and Tricks

I printed this out and am taking it with me on my next trip! I'm curious however, is this only good for the Southwest? What about our little sagebrush desert here in eastern Washington? (Cascade rain-shadow) ALL we have here is basalt! It's an indicator, but we are in the region of thick lava flows ...

Re: Are found treasures taxed?

I wondered about this topic several years ago and even though I have never found any treasure or gold I still wonder about a few things. Some of the laws applying to this seem quite un-American. Why would a person have to pay taxes on something they find on their own land? For that matter on public ...

spooky desert lights

I've recently watched a very entertaining documentary about unexplained UFO phenomenon. It had a segment on the Phoenix lights, something that seems to be controversial to this day. Any of you desert dwellers see it? I think it was probably aircraft, but it makes you wonder! This led me to study up ...

Re: desert cooking

Hi Ed, I think I'll stick to my favorite places in southern Nevada. There are some of my favorite rockhounding areas there and lots of sun for cooking and renewing the soul-its been snowing here, I'm ready for some heat. There are good campgrounds in Beatty, NV, and Death Valley also (alas, no rockh...

Re: Contact Kurt Painter (silent hunter)

I really like the new design Ed! Very sleek and classic, should be great for showing off those stones that have a "busy" design! A nice thing to add to the repertoire! I did some looking into the heart motif! I thought it symbolized an actual heart, but it is actually the female form seen ...
