Re: A rider's own words
I point out that damaging our desert resources because it's the "in" thing to do is just unforgiveable, even if it's done in the spirit of quality family time. Even though this is one of my hobbies, I admit there are some real squirrels out there and I can't think of a better place for th...

Re: Rescuers fear Yuppie 911
Good article! And it shows, quite clearly, the need for some kind of differentiating protocol on these devices. A protocol that can perhaps separate true emergencies from user-caused folly. I know this suggestion sounds unworkable and silly, but its apparent that something needs to be done to reduc...

Re: Rescuers fear Yuppie 911
I have heard that new SPOTs will have more message sending options, like a pager. Right now you have three choices(IIRC) that you must pre-enter on your computer before you leave home. This has created problems just in the circle of people I know. One incident involved a friend on his motorcycle. He...

WOW! Could you imaging driving across that in an 18 wheeler, or a 5th wheel pulling a large trailer on a windy day? Shivers down my spine! I don't think it would be as scary as the current road was back when you could still drive a semi over it. I remember watching them haul a semi trailer straight...

Re: Mother Road National Monument
I frequent that area and there really isn't much to preserve that isn't already privately owned. I really like the part of 66 that goes from Kingman through Seligman and stops near Ash Fork. If they want to spend some money thay should make it go through to Williams.

Re: Motorcycling In The Desert
That advrider.com is an excellent website! I have a friend who toured up in the area around the Nevada, Idaho, and Oregon border after he read a trip report on that area. The trip was a combination of good dirt roads and paved.-desert wanderer They have a section with a bunch of GPX files that are ...

Re: Rescue on Battleaxe Road
It could have happened to any of us. I'm glad you made it out ok. I just bought some "like new" 31" BFGs for my Jeep from a friend. Even though they appeared to be hardly used I just noticed small weather cracks between the lugs. They could fail at any time, particularly when aired do...

Re: Making Nice
Sandman, that truly sucks. How about a telephone pole across the base of it with a ditch in front of it? Not as ugly as a fence and usually effective. It seems from what I've read on here that there isn't much argument about what the problem is. It's what to do about it. In my opinion there have bee...
