nope, I'm in north-central Arizona, but have been impressed the times I've been through the area, and interested. It is so different than what I'm used to.

Re: Glenwood Catwalk, New Mexico
Terry,
I just got a book that has a lot of geology of the area. A NM geo. society field guide to the area around Silver City. The catwalk had an article and some neat pic.s of the mill that used to be at the mouth of WWC. Most of the book is pretty technical geology stuff.

Re: Do all rattlers have to be coiled before srtiking?
One study by Erika Nowak, PhD, was done at Montezuma Castle, AZ, and the study animals were Western Diamondbacks and Blacktail Rattlers. Another study was done at a park in NC. I have both but I'll have to do some digging and I'll post them asap. Jerry, thanks, I picked up a book with one of her pa...

Re: Reptiles and Amphibians of the Afghan Desert.
I'm not a rattler killer, not for 20 years......but I wouldn't let a saw-scaled or russell's viper live anywhere near a tent or a military compound. I believe I read an article a number of years ago, listing the five deadliest snakes of the world. Not the snakes with the deadliest venom, or largest,...

Re: Why continue to kill rattlers???
...... Now, some more facts. Rattlesnakes typically have a home range of about 1 square mile. A snake may not hit every part of the home range every year, sometimes not going to a certain spot for years. I know of three separate studies done on four species of rattlesnakes which indicate that once ...

Re: Rattlesnake ID
I'm not sure that the venom is changing, or just our ability to analyze it!
I believe the non-neurotoxic mojaves are in part of Arizona, and the others have the classic neuro toxic venom.

I've also seen the golden/straw/yellow C. m. m. (molossus molossus) around Sedona, upper Sycamore Canyon , Upper Oak Creek, and on the rim near Williams, AZ. I would think they are tied to the live-oak, madrean eco-system, like the Coues Deer. They represent the northern extent of an essentially Mex...

Cardinal flower, lobelia cardinalis
Awesome flower, I've seen it anywhere from dark blood red, to almost fuschia, sometimes within feet of each other. Grows in similar conditions to monkey-flower.
