All Hikers are vulnerable
In keeping with the thought hat its not just in the desert that folks can get in trouble, I've decided to post other incidents that happen around the world.
Here is the first of - I hope, not many. This incident turned out ok.
Hiker missing 3 days is found hurt in Maine park
BAXTER STATE PARK, Maine (AP) - A hiker missing for three days in a state park in northern Maine has been spotted while waving at a search helicopter and has been rescued.
The helicopter landed Monday afternoon near 41-year-old Michael Hays, who had a crushed kneecap and was covered in insect bites. Rescuers helped him hobble to the helicopter and flew him to a hospital.

You will see, this, again - is an experienced hiker that got careless and made mistakes.
Be careful out there.

Re: All Hikers are vulnerable
Here is another case of an experienced hiker, in North Carolina, earlier this month.
Missing Hiker OK After Spending Night Alone In Gorge
Posted: 11:58 am EDT May 5, 2010Updated: 5:24 pm EDT May 5, 2010
BURKE CO., N.C. -- A massive search took place in the North Carolina mountains Wednesday morning for a hiker who had been missing for hours.
What began as a day hike in the Linville Gorge for 55-year-old Ronnie Greer turned into a punishing 30-mile trek.
For 12 hours, four teams searched a five-mile trail south of Table Rock Mountain in Burke County for Greer. The man managed to find his way out of the gorge on his own, but said it wasn’t an easy journey.
"Twenty-five miles from the car as the crow flies,” Greer said. “I had to bushwhack a couple of times. I had to bushwhack through there.”

Re: All Hikers are vulnerable
The last one, for today, anyway is this one: (Colorado)
Missing Hiker Found Severely Dehrydrated, Airlifted to Hospital
What started as a typical hike in the Bookcliffs takes a quick turn for the worst. Mesa County Search and Rescue teams flooded Little Bookcliffs Wild Horse Area in Cameo Wednesday night and Thursday morning. The call came in around 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, and deputies said Steven Spiewak had gotten lost while hiking. Crews searched for the missing man for seven hours straight, only to take a short break and start the search again early Thursday.
Deputies said the 26-year-old man made his way up Mount Garfield hoping to see some wild horses. But hours later, his search quickly came to a dangerous end when he was lost in Cameo at dark.

Good Idea Beth!
Everyone can learn from the mistakes of others if they pay attention.

The "missing hiker" story of the day is this:

This person was on a day hike, and planned to be back by 8 pm.

Beth:
These are excellent examples and hopefully people will learn from others who make life threatening mistakes such as entering a hot desert region not properly prepared.
