Quartz in the Supers

Post by roc2rol »

I’ve done some rock hounding around the Supers
very little and only on the periphery
so not much of an expert
I found much rhyolite, marble and orange silicon based rocks
but now that I think of it
I don’t recall finding much quartz
if any at all

Not that that- is important as the only indication of gold
but as it relates to the LDM it major part of the tale

So I’m wondering if any of you hunters have pictures
of any major quartz seams in Supers ?
perhaps you could post?

or you could relate your expertise on this subject?

Thanks

Howdy Kurt

Thanks for the pictures.
You’re just the right person to answer the question.

This question struck me when I was rock hounding just north
of Happy Valley Road around 16th ave.
Chunks of milky white & rose colored quartz were prolific.
It was spread everywhere. Actually there is housing development in that area. One of the roads is called Quartz Road.
I plan on doing some more hounding around there
cause I would like to find that Quartz seam.

What little experience I have in Supers--
I just hadn’t noticed that much quartz.
Of course, I realize that quartz is found everywhere.
But in some spots its really obvious.
I would follow any seam of quartz as much as possible in the Supers.

Over at the old (now closed-pisses me off) Az Mining Museum
They had huge amount of quartz that had been scooped up
from around Black Canyon City.
They used this material to demonstrate
their Mill Stamper. They could extract a considerable
amount of gold from these demonstrations. Not anymore!
The Museum is closed.
Did I mention that PISSES ME OFF? !

As to your gypsum or selenite --also called desert rose, satin spar ect.
At least---That’s what I think it is. It’s a well formed sample.
As some value. But mostly just a cool rock to add to your collection.
Where did you find it?

And you must have a really great collection of rocks by now!!!
Seeing pictures of your adventures.
What other types of polishable stones do you find in the Supers?
Much Jaspers or agates? How about chryscholla?
O and opals would be sweet.

Thanks Man !
take care

Roc, I have found locations for all those rocks you mentioned....Jim Hatt took me to the Opal spot. I also know where Agates are found about 1000 feet off the main road...If you are ever coming out let me know and I will show you a canyon just off the main road where you could have a field day.....Chryscholla is found in a hard to find spot on the west side of the Supes....I found a mountain of the selenite it is in a spot where I could claim it....Is tons of that worth anything?

Well ya know Kurt
good quality rocks
have a decent price

Say that gypsum. A good solid block
would have great value to a carver.
Those crystal configuration
have some value if there easy to procure.
Other wise your talking industrial commerce.

Agates & jaspers have decent price
depending on type. It takes a good eye &
how much effort to mine - determines it worth.

Knowing how it cuts and what
folks are look for in polishing
is real helpful.
Rough as a great price if its
well known types of jaspers:
Biggs, Morrisonite, Willow Creek ect…
$ 25.00 lb and way up.
Other jaspers benefit from slabbing.
Gem silica, a variety of chryscholla, is a hot item.

There is an art to hounding & lapidary
I’m trying to stay ahead of.
Takes lots of time and effort.
I just keep it as personal hobby
but have good resources
& keep my eyes open to make a good score.

As to that opal, you know as well as I,
that opal as a premium value.
Pick up all you can- soon as possible
Impress the ladies -make big bucks

I had noticed that Peters Mesa is loaded with rose quartz when I was there in 2010. I had seen a whole bunch of it along side the trail up there.

Interesting!
That was chunk of rose quartz lying on the ground?
The picture Kurt posted is serious seam of quartz
as we all know rose quartz was a core clue in the LDM

I'm not sure where I'm going with this thread
I just get fascinated with quartz & gold

Howdy Amigos,

That sure beats all, after I had been convinced that rose quartz loses its rose color when exposed to heat.
