Well, I'm in a motel in Kanab now. We stayed in St. George last night and tried to go across on 1009 from I15 east to come back on the highway AZ389 between Colorado City and Pipe Springs.
However, about 18 miles in we encountered a muddy stretch and decided to go back. The next plan was to go by way of Hurricane to Pipe Springs and then down to Kanab Point.

Well, by the time we got to Pipe Springs it was all ugly and rainy and then began to snow, so we had to call it off. :(

Maybe tomorrow.

We are wishing you better luck today Slim. That mud out there can get really sticky. It's better to spend the evening in a nice warm motel room than stuck up to your axels in the muck. Maybe you can find some higher rocky roads to tarverse. Smithsonian Butte road over to Springdale might be an option. Have fun and keep us all posted.

That is too bad about the weather. I spent all day today bumming around Gold Butte, and then we snuck into PNM via AZ 113 and hit up the 1050 through Grand Gulch Canyon with some heavily modified JK wranglers. We made it through relatively unscathed, but that stretch of trail is definitely not for the typical desert cruiser. We turned around right as we were getting to the top since we needed to head back to Vegas and didn't feel like going all the way up to St. George. I will post a photo or two when I get some from my buddies. Roads on the western half of the AZ strip were mud free for us.

Here is some from the other day:

Sunday got better for us on the other side, south of Kanab. The rain, and snow of Sat. evening in Kanab had passed and Sunday morning dawned sunny and clear.

After breakfast, we left for Kanab Point and then Toroweap overlook, if time. We got to Kanab Point abount noontime and took pictures and then had some lunch. We had stopped several times along the way and it way quite breezy at some places and then not much at Kanab Point. There were a few muddy stretches along the way but all were passable.

When we got back to the road from AZ SR389 to Toroweap, CR 5?, we decided that there was not enough time to continue farther south so we headed back as one couple was going to Page for the night. I went on back to Mesquite were I stayed at the Virgin River Inn and enjoyed the Randy Anderson Band in the casino lounge. :D

Yesterday, I hosed out the wheel wells of my Jeep and then cleaned up the gutter in front of my house. As Sandman says above, "sticky" is right! I had about 1 cu foot, or more, of red clay collected. :(

That red crap is terrible to deal with. I think it is part cement!

I'm glad to see you made it up though there. That is one of my favorite roads but it is pretty difficult going for most.

We just did two preruns for the trip we are doing the first weekend in May. If anyone wants to tag along let me know.

Where all are you going and when are you leaving? Is this the semi annual run or something different?

Went to Parashant this weekend. Visited Tassi Ranch and went back to Grand Gulch Mine via the canyon that winds up at Savanic mine. The traveling accomodations were courtesy of a wheelin' buddy with a JK running on 34's. No issues this time and the weather was perfect. I will post a couple of photos later this week of some of the scenery.

I was out there last weekend too but didn't see Nissanboy. This was a logistically confusing trip and we had our hands full just keeping our group together, much less trying to meet with anyone else.

From Mesquite we went over Limekiln, passed through Brumley and Jacob's wells to Corral Canyon. Up and over more or less south to a place where the road was very hard to find from lack of use on a plateau that doesn't have a name on topos. It had all been burned and kinda reminded me of the places on Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. I was half expecting a lion to go after a wilderbeast right in front of us! On the east side we found a very steep road that hadn't been used in quite some time. We had to scout this on foot with a topo map and a GPS just to piece it back together. After moving enough boulders to build a medium size castle out of the way we were able to make it down!

This took us to Pocum Wash. From here we went down Hidden Canyon through the Nutter Twists to Last Chance Canyon. We went up to the top of the plateau at Eastview and looked down over the valley. What a view! It was cold and windy but worth it just to peak over at the valley.

From here we took Hidden Canyon to Pigeon Canyon and over to the Grand Gulch Mine. After checking out the mine we headed south between Mustang Point and Snap Canyon up to the top of the plateau above the Ft. Garrett ruins. The two groups met here and camped on the edge over looking the Sanup Plateau.

Sunday one group headed back on a similar route to the one from Saturday while our group came home on the main road to St. George.

On the way back we met Ranger Ray and had a nice chat about the area. It was good to meet him and our talk gave us hope about the future of the area.

I was flying in from Denver to Vegas today and flew right over the heart of Parashant. I was able to notice numerous familiar trails out there based on the landing strips that I could tell from 10,000' feet up. It was cool and makes me want to head back out there.
