Access to Arizona public lands designated for OHV use

Post by gdpine »

I recently stopped to read a sign at the gate entry of a dirt road southeast of Florence, AZ. The sign indicated a permit was required for OHV use. I went to the web site indicated and found fees for OHV vehicles. However, it is still not clear to me if any kind of permit is required for access to the dirt roads by a jeep licensed in Arizona. Can someone enlighten me?

In Arizona all OHVs must have a ID plate. You can go with a off road plate or street legal plate. The requirements for street legal are simple. Be a resident, have insurance, have a lincense and in some areas like Phonex, be smog certified.

Then if you plan on using state lands you will need a special use permit for each OHV. Again it is simple if you are a resident. It looks like you went to some state land so yes a permit is required.

It is real sad that we, as in "we the people" have to have permits to use "public land". The nonsense has to stop somewhere.

youre talking about a state trust sign, correct? if you drive a jeep you will need to get a state trust permit to tool around out there. if a vehicle weighs 1800lbs or less you need a ohv sticker on either plate you have (motorcycle or rv). what i have been told by law enforcement is that the sticker permits you to travel across state trust land but does not allow you to stop and play. best thing for you to do is pick up a permit from the blm...
