Can anyone identify this rock?

Post by Guz »

Something else We've collected over the years. This rock reminded me of the scene from shawshank redemption...It had no business being where it was. we looked all over for more like it. Any ideas?

I don't know exactly what it is but I have a geologist friend that could identify it for you. Obviously formed from geothermal activity.

I've got to hit the sack right now but will email him the Photo for identification when I get up. In fact I'm going to the office in the morning so I may just print-out the Photo and take it to him and see what he says.

Gus: It definitely looks like a piece of conglomerate rock. Made up of other smaller rocks. Some areas are loaded with it, usually near stream beds, washes.

Sorry about the attachment, to lazy to load onto photo bucket.
Maybe PITD will find something out. Rocks are very hard to identify, I have a rock book & it's still hard.

Guz, here's the response I got from my Geologist Friend at the mine I work at:

"Unfortunately, this is a sample that is best looked at in
person before I'd feel confident that the diagnosis is correct.

It APPEARS to be an example of a patina, or desert pavement, that is
produced by surface weathering in a hot, arid environmnet. The coating
is almost like a varnish (some call it that), and from what I've read
(you can look it up), it's composed of layers of iron and manganese
oxides, plus or minus some silica gels, produced by long cycles of
sporadic "wet" and lots of "dry".

The host rock may be a conglomerate (I can't tell because of the
varnish, but a fresh surface would tell the tale). I'd have to see it
to confirm it. I assume you picked this up in southern Nevada?"

I trust this will help you out. So Guz, where did you find this rock?
