Backpack?
Well, it's been a long time since I did that...But back then I lived out of it....Two years hitchhiking and hiking...
For now I'm pretty happy just hiking....I been working in the office so long that I've lost muscle tone and it feels good to hike....Actually, it makes me feel younger! But I'll have to pass on the backpack for now!
As for the Coati....It is fun to be confronted by a wild animal with big teeth and claws!

Cardinal flower, lobelia cardinalis
Awesome flower, I've seen it anywhere from dark blood red, to almost fuschia, sometimes within feet of each other. Grows in similar conditions to monkey-flower.

You haven't had fun with Coatis until you have been to Central America. I used to run into them all the time down there. The locals call a group of Coatis "un tribu," a tribe, because that's how they run around - in tribes. There would be a couple of large males, a few females plus at least a half dozen young of various ages. In the Peloncillos, I once saw a small tribe, about six individuals.

What can I say, thanks. Those guys are so neat. After raising a raccoon I have an idea of what they'd be like. Got to see one in real life somewhere and interact with them. If they're anything like raccoons then they are very fast with their paws which are like hands and can bite really hard. I don't know why, I've just always liked them a lot. Read the topics with them too,

Great pics Rep. That gator lizard reminds me greatly of a species I have been unable to identify that I saw in the vicinity of Keswick Dam near Redding, Ca. Someone on another site tried to tell me that they were souther gator lizards, but they were no such thing. They looked much more like this one or the Panamint Alligator Lizard. Yet I am unable to find them in any book or on any site.
