The birds in my backyard....

Post by reptilist » Tue Jun 23, 2009 5:28 pm

I feed the birds out back. Two big scoops of seed thrown on the ground brings them in.

House Finches. (Always the first to arrive.)
English Sparrows.
Mourning Doves.
Whitewing Doves.
Inca Doves.
Eurasian Collared Doves. (Outnumbers the other doves by far.)
Gambel's Quail. (Multiple extended family units.)
Cactus Wrens. (They reared a family in the front cactus and recently moved on.)
Curved Bill Thrashers. (They took over the front cactus and the Cactus Wrens got run off.)
Hooded Orioles. (male and female, they prefer the hummingbird feeder.)
Cardinals. (Common but spook easily.)
Blue Grosbeak. (Once)
Brown Headed Cowbirds. (They come in large flocks.)
A parakeet (Came in with the flock of cowbirds!)
Black Throated Sparrows. (Cute little birds.)

Nice going Rep. lets see some photos. The only birds I can feed are the American Gold Finches (Wild Canary) which only seem to come around in the winter months. Due to the Pigeons in the area. I do keep the bird bath filled all the time which brings many birds to the yard, some of which you mentioned other then the Cardinal. Use to see them back East. We enjoy the Doves cooing for a mate.
Now we do have a Mocking Bird here that is running his mouth all hours of the night, we think it's funny.
He now has the name of Motor Mouth. :D

We throw seed out for the Quail, we call them our babies. We love to watch them through the window, they're so very cautious. I think one of them plays the part of guard bird as there's always one who stands by him or her self and watches the others. Very interesting birds...

Here's a photo of a Burrowing Owl in our back yard that was filling himself or her on crickets. He hung around every night for a couple of weeks.
I forgot to mention in the other post that we also feed the Humming Birds.

Taken from the upstairs balcony after tossing a handful of seed - don't usually feed the wild birds, but it made for a nice picture - note: quail on top, doves on bottom, except for one rebel child down toward the bottom of the pic:

Thought I'd continue adding to this thread. Here's a shot from a while ago of a Mourning Dove ----

Notice the blue ring around the eye --- thought that was pretty.

Here's another dove, only this one is the White-winged Dove. The whilte feathers down the perimeter of the wing are the give away. The blue ring around th eye is not as pronounced and his beak and head is shaped differently ---

Taken today in the back yard.
