Glad you are enjoying the forums Javaone!

That is a pretty remote area back there. You and the Mrs. do intend to leave a map with someone, showing where you are going and when you expect to return don't you?

You shouldn't have any trouble at all making it to the top of Tortilla Pass, and back without running out of daylight if you get an early start.

It is kind of a switchback trail going up there, but it is well worn and easy to follow.

Enjoy yourselves and post some photos of your trip when you get back.

Will do Jim, and yes we are doing all the precautions. We will be going within the next couple of weekends - Weather permitting.

Hey Jim,
I finally put my boots to the ground. :D To actually be in the Superstitions is … well., I’m sure as you all know, it’s indescribable. Even though “my time in grade” here has been short, it’s embedded in my sole.
I am a scuba diver that has searched the cenote caverns of the Riviera Maya, been to the Grand Cayman wall, sailed the British Virgin Islands, seen the sand falls at Cabo, and I am a “duner” - I have never experienced anything more “awesome” than the Superstitions.
I am a native Arizonan, I should have looked to own my back yard.

I understand that Mr. John Kemm has posted the lattitude and Longitude of what he believes to be the location of the lost duchmans goldmine. As humorous as this seems has anyone actually gone to the location that he has given? Just to make sure he is wrong.

Just a query?

Thanks

Welcome to the DUSA Forums pjx,

That whole area has been searched many times by every serious Dutch-Hunter since Bark & Ely. John selected that area based on his interpretation of the Stone Maps, and what he thinks he saw using Google Earth. Then he just "Assumed" that since that was (in his opinion) the end of the stone map trail, the LDM must be there too.

Nobody I know, has taken John seriously enough, to spend any time on any of his theories.

Nobody is responsible for proving John is wrong. Look at it this way... If you and 50 other people went up there and failed to find the LDM. Would that prove John is wrong? No, that would only prove that they failed to find it. That would not PROVE that it is not there.

I think you have the shoe (Burden of Proof) on the wrong foot. It should be up to John, to go there himself, and waste his own time and resources, in an attempt to prove he is right.

Well thanks Jim,

I feel like I have been bitten by the Dutchman's bug. I am headed to AZ on a vacation and can't wait to get a day to hike in the superstitions. Last time I was there I took the hwy around the mountains and it offered me some of the most beautiful views. Now I want to trek into it and do a little hunt for gold myself. I have read so many web pages and looked at so many maps. I really appreciate your wonderful web forum, it has definitely given me a lot to think about and watch out for. Great resource

Thanks,
Paul

You're Welcome pjx,

I just hope you are also paying close attention to the topic devoted the search for Jesse Capen, and are taking notes about the "Do's" and "Dont's" you need to be aware of, before going into remote areas of the Superstitions!

Hi All,

What is a good handheld GPS. I have one, but it doesn’t seem to work very well. When I enter in a projection point and then I go there it is way off. Even when I am standing there and mark a point I find later that it is way off too. When I say it’s off I mean by several hundred yards. Any suggestions on a good one that won’t break the bank. :)

Thanks

I have had that happen to me a few times javaone.

It may not be the fault of your GPS. Sometimes when one satellite goes out of view and another one comes in you can get a short term error like that. You can also experience that when you are working with a minimum number of visible satellites. Keep working with it in different areas, and see if the problem persists before replacing it.
