You had wondered how they drilled holes. Do not know about ancients but early great lakes indians used a flint drill bit. My dads collection which I have given to my son has broken and at least one intact bit. As I remember them as it has been a long time since I looked at them last. The intact bit was about 2 1/2 inches long with a very long narrow taper. not square but two opposite sides long & 2 shorter. It was a very fragile piece. I am trying to go see my son in ohio in the next month. Will try to get photos to post.
