My best guess is - it was Alvin of the Chipmunks.

I really don't know.

I spent a couple of hours on the net and could find nothing that matched the tail markings.

Maybe somebody here can identify it from the paw pads?

Feral or abandoned cat perhaps. Shot of the head if there is one would help.

My guess would be a baby ringtail. The foot pads are consistent with a ringtail track, 5 toes, large palm pads that are fusing together and the heel pad.
Ringtail is the only critter I know of that would have a brownish body fur and a striped B&W tail.
