That is pretty amazing. I had heard about the story and had pretty much assumed that he was dead given the amount of time that had passed. There just isn't much in the way of water in J Tree Nat'l Park.
I'd be very interested in knowing how he survived six days in that kind of heat. It's been very hot in that part of the world.

Joking aside, incredible that he survived the heat wave that we had here for several days in southern California.
WOW!!! A very improbable happy ending!

P.S. Here's more of the story.

Still pretty miraculous, but pretty believable considering where he was found and how dehydrated he was. I doubt a person putting on a hoax would risk their life by getting dehydrated to the point Rosenthal was. Amazing that he was still lucid. Maybe he found some shade under the rocks and was able to stay out of the sun?

Re: Desert hiker missing 6 days found alive
I have been reading some of the more recent news releases about Rosenthal who survived six days in the Mohave Desert in Joshua Tree National Park area. It was quite a survival episode and from what I am reading it doesn't sound that impossible. Temperatures only got up to about 100
Degrees. When I was in the Middle East a young American hiking in the southern part of the Negev Desert was lost for eight days without water and he survived. However, he was close to death when a couple of IDF soldiers found him. He was in the hospital for almost a month recovery from dehydration and heat stroke. The temperatures were never over 105*F during those eight days. Doctor did say many other people would have died under similar conditions.
I believe the Rosenthal story is one remarkable man's effort to survive in the desert. The report I read said he had a camelback, but it didn't say when he actually ran out of water. He could have been without water for no more than seventy-two hours.
Very interesting case of survival. When I taught desert survival at the college I mentioned several unbelievable cases of survival in the desert over the past century. Some people die within three days, and other survive for more depending on the conditions of their survival episode.
Take care,
Tom K

I just read an article that mentions that there's been cloud cover in Joshua Tree this past week. Cloud cover would have made a HUGE difference.

A lot of the posters that comment on PE articles should have their computers taken away. The PE should disable the ability to make comments.TradClimber wrote:http://www.pe.com/localnews/stories/PE_ ... df118.html

Strange as it may sound... From what I saw on the news tonight. The fellow is just an "awsome survivalist"!TradClimber wrote: Another reader wrote: (From PE)

What an inspiration for someone to think about, if they ever have to spend an extra few "unplanned" days in the desert.
