MOUNT BALDY (CBS) — CBS 2 and KCAL 9 have learned that missing hiker Michelle Yu has been found dead on Mount Baldy in San Bernardino County.

Officials had been looking for Yu for several days. She was first reported missing over the weekend.

Rescuers attempted to find her via ground and by helicopter. San Bernardino Sheriff’s Public Affairs told CBS 2 and KCAL 9 Wednesday night, that earlier today the unit’s Air Rescue Six saw what appeared to be a body in a rugged and icy area known as Fish Fork, northwest of the summit.

Yu had failed to return home Saturday from what she told friends was going to be a simple one-day hike on the 10,000 foot pike.

Solo hiking/climbing is a risky game to play – even if you are an “expert”.

This fatality happened in my neck of the woods last weekend.

She apparently fell off the Devil's Backbone on Mt. Baldy and went 2000 vertical feet down the steep ice.

It can happen so quickly on ice. One second, you're fine. Another second, you're out of control. A third second, and you're dead. RIP, Michelle.

"During her hike, Yu had been carrying a 40-pound bag of rocks on her back to train for an upcoming extreme hike in the Andes Mountains."

I would of choosed to carry 40-pound bag of survival gear considering the weather that was comming in.

Read the "thank you" below the article.

Dang shame about Michelle. Who knows what happened exactly although it sounds like she slipped on some ice and went over the side.

A very nice thank you and a noteworthy request: that people support their local SAR organization.
