Four-wheel off-road racing returns to Imperial Valley CA

There were plenty of winners in Saturday's SoCal 250 held at Plaster City, from the Southern Nevada Off-Road Enthusiasts racing series based in Nevada. But the real winner was off-road racing in the Imperial Valley.This past weekend marked the return of four-wheel off-road racing to the Imperial Valley, a needed and welcomed return. “We were very pleased with the turnout, the number of entries,” SNORE race director Robert Gross said. “The spectators behaved themselves very well and we enjoyed the cooperation with the BLM.

I like hearin about folks enjoying the desert. What better place to enjoy riding than the open OHV areas. It's up to those who care to be good stewards of the public lands that belong to us all. Not everyone gets it perfect but....it's up to the rest of us to be good examples. There's a good reason why we have designated OHV areas.

I didn't make the tour but we did do some trails between the Johnson Valley OHV area and the Rodman mountains. One canyon was a corridor through a rugged wilderness area. It was wild, remote and a stopover for a migrating Golden eagles. These birds are always a treat to watch. We contemplated the possible effect of military practice upon the nesting habits of these symbols of our national pride. The Department of Defense already has ample space in the nearby designated military areas such as 29 Palms and China Lake. What is the logic that justifies the loss of more critical nesting habitat. Are the American people mindless sheep in our pursuit of justice? Didn't we find Osama Bin Laden and his wives in a fortified compound somewhere in Pakistan? The nearby desert holds both habitat for the wild and land suitable for rockcrawling and racing. The Department of Defense already holds a vast swath of land nearby for their exclusive use. Does each branch of the military get their own gazillion acres? Once the public is excluded, we are NEVER alowed back in....for any reason!
