And barely 100 years old IMO. The great Jesuit roundup in the southwest was 250 years ago.
A transplanted Saguaro would have to be even older than that, and look something like this....

There's plenty like that out there in the mountains.
Also...keep in mind the fact that those markings would have had to have been made when the ones in question were already 50 plus years old.
As for the nick names I call things, well - they are nick names.
And I ain't the one wearing the panties around here......just sayin

Re: Here is what happened
Thanks for the additional photos Ryan. I know you believe it is man made and it could very well be, but the skeptic in me has to use the K.I.S.S. principle and start by ruling out natural causes. I don't have the slightest idea what in nature could cause such uniform markings, but if anyone has seen anything like those V's on other cacti out there - especially if you can post photos of similar things it would be interesting.

Revised my previous post, to further clarify my opinion.

Any Saguaro transplanted by pre-expulsion Jesuits would have to have been ready to put markings on by then.
And if all four shown in the photo survived , would now look like this.....

With various natural wounds, wren holes and now and then, man made markings as well.....including bullet holes.

Re: Here is what happened
Thanks again Ryan! It's hard for me to remember the stories my dad told me (over 45 yrs ago) & I never really knew how it all happened, Nowadays I would get Jesuits, Peraltas, Conquistadors & everyone in between mixed up!!! Mostly I remember my experiences there with my dad. But as far as how it all came to be, I was too young to learn or care. Your postings here are helping me to learn much more of how it happened, not necessarily pertaining to the rocks but the history.
Thank you, Carrol

Re: Here is what happened
It is possible Travis and friends created the 1847 site
He was being hounded by other treasure hunters and
He was hunting in a different area. Why not create
A diversion, mark some cactus, bury a box, plant some clues for others to follow. All the while search unbothered
In your area of interest. The aging on the cactus marks
Seems to fit that time line. He created the “rocks”
After all which folks have been chasing for years. Ryan you are doing justice to history. The story needs to be told
Tell it true.
